Background:
For over 40 years the former Community Health and Development Project (CHDP) of the United Mission to Nepal (UMN) used its skill and experience in integrated health and development work to serve the people of Palpa. Upon it's closure in 2002 the UMN and the United Mission Hospital Tansen (UMHT) leadership saw the importance of partnering with local communities to enable them to meet their health needs as well as continuing to assist in the provision of high quality primary health services. Therefore, the Community Health Department (CHD) of the UMHT was born.
Mission:
The mission of the CHD is to improve the quality of life of the people of Palpa District by providing high-quality primary health care and to provide training in primary health care in the Spirit and Name of Jesus Christ.
Goals:
The main goals of the CHD are:
- To improve the quality of life of the people of Palpa District through the provision of high-quality primary health care and to provide training.
- To improve the linkage of health care from the community level to the Hospital level.
- To create partnerships with the local community (especially with poor and socially excluded) to enable them to address their needs.
Purpose:
Overall the CHD is concerned with helping people to transform their lives in order to enable them to have better control of their health and therefore their future. We believe that this change can come about through community awareness, empowerment, and strengthening those within the community and district that are currently involved in the provision of services.
The CHD itself is a collection of several programs that are aimed at improving access to quality health care to those who are beyond the reach of the dispensary and empowering communities to enable them to address their own wider needs. For this to occur we must first remove the social, cultural, geographical, and economic barriers to care.
