About UMH Tansen

Who we are and what we do !

The United Mission Hospital Tansen (UMHT) is located in Bhusaldanda, one kilometre up the "Mission road" from the Tansen bazaar.  Tansen, the district headquarters and commercial centre of Palpa District, is a pleasant town built on the side of Shrinagar hill. It lies in the middle hills of Nepal, at an altitude of 1320 metres, 300 kms west of Kathmandu, 125 kms from Pokhara and 80 kms from Bhairahawa on the Indian border. The population of Tansen swells when the local campus of the Tribhuvan University is in session. Although the United Mission Hospital Tansen is located in Palpa District, approximately 70% of its patients come from the surrounding nine districts, Western Nepal, and from nearby parts of North India.

At present the hospital has around 405 Nepali Employees (including trainees) and 12 mission appointees from six different countries, who work mostly as senior doctors in a teaching role, or in other support roles. The staff are grouped under the major divisions, Nursing, Medical, Administration, and the two newer divisions of Community Health and Pastoral Care.

The Medical Division comprises the doctors and paramedical departments, Laboratory, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dental, Anaesthesia, Out Patient Department and Pharmacy. We have 8 posts for surgeons, general / urology and orthopaedics, and 9 posts for senior medical officers, who are General Practitioners, Paediatricians, an Anaesthetist, and Medical Officers with special training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Internal Medicine. There are several resident medical officers who are either on the MDGP training course or are just post internship. We are accredited by NMC to train fifteen interns per year and, following new rules, are exploring the possibility of interns rotating from a nearby medical college.

The Nursing division includes Ward Nursing, Housekeeping and Laundry, Operating Room and Minor Operating room staff and Central Sterilisation Department. We have Bachelor level as well as certificate and diploma level nurses.  The nursing students from Tansen Nursing School do their practical training on the wards. The administrative Division includes the Managerial, Accounts, Cashiers, Stores, Purchasing, Security, Workshop, Biomedical, Coputer officer and Guesthouse.

The Community Health Department staffs the town clinic MCH clinic jointly with Nepal Government and runs Health Post Strengthening, Post Partum and Healthy Schools Program in the community, and has recently opened a Community Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre.  There are 2 satellite MCH clinics in remote vdcs. CHD runs Safer Motherhood awareness raising program, disability and gender program, and Healthy Schools Program in five rural VDCs and broadcast a weekly FM radio magazine program on health issues. CHD coordinates a Health Post Referral system.

The Pastoral Care department cares for patients' financial, emotional and spiritual needs. The pastoral care team are responsible for charity assessment, counselling, the toy and book round, education for admitted children, free food for children and those with special nutritional needs, and spiritual care.
